Growth Form: Mostly herbs, some shrubs and small trees often roughly hairy.

Stems: Herbaceous or woody.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or rarely opposite at base of plant. <u>Surfaces</u> hairy. Surfaces hairy. <u>Margins</u> nearly always entire. Margins nearly always entire. Petiolate to sessile; non–sheathing, or sheathing. <b>Stipules</b> absent. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences terminal, or axillary, flowers arranged in a scorpioid cyme. Flowers radially symmetric. <b>Calyx</b> mostly with 5 distinct lobes. <b>Corolla</b> with 5 lobes typically connate and with a small appendages in the throat. <b>Stamens</b> 5. <b>Ovary</b> superior, 4-lobed, carpels 2 or rarely 4–5.; <u>ovules</u> 1 per lobe; <u>style</u> gynobasic; <u>stigma</u> 1, 2, or 4 lobed.

Fruit: Loculicidal capsules.
